The passage between waking and sleep, where images form on their own — for those who want to learn to linger there a moment longer.
Every night, you cross a country you never look at.
The initiation pack to the Xhosa and Zulu dream roots, held by a living tradition.
The passage between waking and sleep, where images form on their own — for those who want to learn to linger there a moment longer.

INFUSE wiki, digested books, tradition of origin. These plants have a history.

A quiet place, no interruptions. Not alone if possible. Not mixed with anything else. A held frame is what makes the meeting possible.

The first time, always under-dose. The plant answers a quiet call better than a loud demand. Read the preparation guidance in the wiki — each plant has its own path.

What comes, comes. What doesn't come, doesn't come. No judgment. No comparing to what others have lived. Your meeting is your own.

Write, speak, take days. The experience doesn't end when the plant leaves the body. It keeps working. Give it time.
« Helps me sleep deeply and calms me down when I have an anxiety attack. Pleasant taste. Deep sleep guaranteed. Psychoactive effects rather light but very present and pleasant. Very mystical, floating and introspective. I'm a fan. Impeccable quality »
« Very good quality. I had very vivid Dreams! Now i try to lucid dream and shift. Small tip: do not boil the water, otherwise the tea will be bitter. »
Hypnagogia (from the Greek hypnos, sleep, and agōgos, leading) is the state you pass through as you fall asleep. Eyes closed, images rise on their own, sometimes a voice, a whole sentence, a feeling of falling. The psychologist Andreas Mavromatis devoted a book to it in 1987; our article on hypnagogia describes the state in detail.
One study links a plant directly to this state. In 1986, Mayagoitia, Díaz and Contreras had volunteers nap after taking Calea: light sleep increased, so did dream reports, and the researchers read them as hypnagogic imagery.
“[…] By taking this herb I see colors with my eyes closed and I dream very intensely at night. […]”
Hypnagogia lasts as long as falling asleep does. An evening tea, a dark room, no screen: a good setting to observe it. The images are watched as they pass; written down on waking the way you would write down a dream, then read again after a few nights, they show which ones come back.
To go further into the dream itself: herbs for lucid dreaming. Every dream herb, with what the sources say: our guide to lucid dreaming herbs. And our dream families: dream herbs, the Ubulawu roots.
The first time, start with a small dose. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: abstain. If you take any treatment (antidepressants, anxiolytics, sleeping pills, heart medication): ask a doctor before any plant. After a plant that has made you drowsy, driving waits until the next day. The Ubulawu roots are taken at traditional doses: swallowed in capsules, at higher doses and outside any ritual, they brought confused and disturbing dreams (Sobiecki, 2012).
The state of passage between waking and sleep, as you fall asleep. Images, sounds, sometimes whole sentences arise in it on their own. Its counterpart on waking is called hypnopompia. All about this state: hypnagogia, between waking and sleep.
Calea first: in 1986, researchers read the dreams it brought during a nap as hypnagogic imagery. Then blue lotus, drunk in the evening, and Yauhtli, with which one of our dreamers sees colours with her eyes closed.
Hypnagogia happens at the edge of sleep, as you drift off; a lucid dream happens inside the dream, when you know you are dreaming. One can lead to the other: some people pass from hypnagogic images into a dream without losing awareness. The herbs for that other intention: lucid dreaming.
In the evening, shortly before lying down: Calea as a 3-minute tea, blue lotus as an infusion, imphepho burned as a smudge. Met alone the first time, each herb is easier to recognise.
They come with falling asleep for many people, who do not always remember them. If they worry you or disturb your sleep, a doctor will be able to talk them through with you.
They are sold freely in France. The law differs from one country to the next: check yours before you order.
Ask the Forest: ethics of a plant, dose, lineage, synergy. It shares what peoples have transmitted and what books have written.
