Caffeine: guayusa is a powerfully caffeinated plant (1.7 to 1.8 % on average, sometimes more). He wakes you and keeps you awake — to be kept for the morning and the daytime, not for the evening. People sensitive to caffeine, anxious, hypertensive or with heart conditions should approach him with the same caution as a strong coffee.

Overdose: the Achuar describe the symptoms of too strong a dose (a high caffeine load) — severe headaches, bloodshot eyes, disturbing sensations. The Shuar and Achuar deliberately avoid the wild plants richest in caffeine. Stay within reasonable doses; do not multiply concentrated cups.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: like any source of caffeine, to be strongly limited or even avoided. Seek the advice of a health professional.

Children: not recommended (caffeinated plant).

Emetic effect: some older accounts describe vomiting associated with guayusa. This is not a pharmacological effect of the plant — it is a bodily practice culturally learned in certain ritual contexts. Guayusa drunk normally does not make you vomit.

My new coffee replacement… I love this tea, an amazing boost to start my day, a little racy for the first few minutes but that’s just me in general, like a sketch from the Benny Hill Show and then you can feel your brain clicking into place. Focus is great; I’m getting so much more done in my crammed day , motivation is back as it should be. I highly recommend if you need a decent morning boost without the headaches and speedy feeling I used to get with guarna!!

I had never tasted Guayusa but it already attracted me strangely and I can tell you that I have never consumed so much and like to consume one of your herbs so much from the first day of receipt, especially without knowing. This plant is absolutely extraordinary and its taste is highly pleasant by remaining subtle. I was looking for something relaxing and energizing at the same time and it does so much more! It feeds me with immense positivity, joy. It is the only energizing plant or one of the only ones that does not cause me either any heart palpiations (while I have a breath in the heart and it beats very fast) or stress, unlike kanna it succeeds me really well. What is guayusa?

Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is a holly of western Amazonia, cousin of yerba mate, whose leaves are caffeinated. The Shuar and Achuar peoples of Ecuador drink her every morning, in circle, before dawn — to awaken together and share the night's dreams. She gives long, ample energy, without the peak or the crash of coffee.

How much caffeine does guayusa contain?

The leaves typically contain 1.7 to 1.8% caffeine, sometimes 3 to 4%, with a record 7.6% recorded on a wild plant. A cup brings a clear awakening but spread over several hours. She is a powerful caffeinated plant, to reserve for the morning and the daytime.

What's the difference between guayusa and coffee?

Coffee arrives like a discharge and leaves like a crash. Guayusa carries her caffeine differently — a wide and long awakening, without the aggressive peak or the rebound. Her note is gentle, vegetal, slightly bitter, less tannic than tea. Many adopt her as a morning coffee alternative.

How do I prepare guayusa?

The Shuar lineage boils dried leaves on low heat, at least ten minutes, ideally half an hour to an hour; five leaves for one cup is an ancient reference. Does guayusa help remember dreams?

The Shuar and the Achuar of the Ecuadorian Amazon — peoples that older ethnography grouped under the name Jibaro — name her *wayus*. Not a tea, not a coffee: a holly, an Ilex, direct cousin of South American mate and of yaupon of the southeastern North American peoples. Three caffeinated hollies from the three Americas, all tied to collective awakening uses.

Among the Shuar and Achuar, the founding gesture is not individual: it is a circle. Before daybreak, the men gather around the fire and drink a guayusa decoction together for about an hour. It is not a coffee swallowed in passing. It is an hour held — to tell the dreams of the night, to read the omens, to attune the group before the world begins. Guayusa is not the drink of solitary productivity.

Where coffee arrives like a discharge and leaves like a fall, guayusa carries its caffeine differently: her leaves typically contain 1.7 to 1.8%, enough to wake frankly, in a long, broad texture. No aggressive spike, no rebound. The wakefulness of the fire lit before dawn, that holds until noon.

There is one thing this plant does that no other caffeinated plant does: she keeps her strength almost indefinitely. Leaves found in a tomb of the Tiahuanaco culture in Bolivia, radiocarbon-dated around the year 355, still contained caffeine. Leaves more than a thousand years old still held more than half the concentration of fresh leaves. Guayusa is a plant that does not forget what she is. The morning she carries is a morning that lasts.

And Ecuador lends her a stubborn legend, which INFUSE keeps as legend: it is said that when a person offers guayusa to a loved one, that loved one will always return, however far the journey may have taken them. A plant of return, of fidelity, of the thread that does not break.

Guayusa grows only in the humid tropical forests of the western Amazon — chiefly in Ecuador, and at the margins of north-eastern Peru and south-western Colombia. He is an evergreen tree that can reach some fifteen metres; in cultivation, a singular fact, he never produces flowers. He has been dispersed and propagated by human hands for so long that his truly wild state is barely known any more.

Among the Shuar and the Achuar — peoples that older ethnography grouped under the name Jibaro — the best-known use of guayusa is ritual and daily. Every morning, before dawn, the men drink together a decoction prepared over a low fire. It is a moment of cohesion, of storytelling and of divination: dreams are shared there, the coming day is read there. The Indians of Ecuador and north-eastern Peru even make special drinking bowls for guayusa, called guayuceros.

The Shuar also use the leaves as an additive to ayahuasca, and drink guayusa before, during or after ceremonies — to wipe away the bitterness and avoid the backlash the next day. The plant is ancient in the region: the funerary leaves of Niño Korin (Bolivia, around 355 CE) bear witness to it. And Ecuador attaches to him a persistent legend, which INFUSE keeps as a legend: it is said that when a person offers guayusa to a loved one, that person will always return, however far the journey has taken them. The Shuar tradition boils the dried leaves over a low fire, at least ten minutes, ideally half an hour to an hour; five leaves for a cup is an old marker.
