Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible mushroom that grows in cascades of white spines on old trunks. He carries three names according to cultures — Lion's Mane in the West, yamabushitake (monk's mushroom) in Japan, houtou (monkey head) in China — and is taken as a daily cure for clarity and baseline attention.

What are the traditional uses of Lion's Mane?

In Japan, she is called *yamabushitake* — literally the mushroom of the yamabushi, those ascetic-monks of the Shugendō tradition, practitioners of mountain, fasting and long walking, who meditated beneath the icy waterfalls. The name is not arbitrary: the yamabushi ritual robes are fringed with white pompoms — the suzukake — and the fringed cascade of the mushroom resembles that uniform to the point of confusion. As if the mountain had herself dressed the mushroom as a monk.

In China, she is *houtou* (猴頭) — "monkey head" — and long a luxury reserved for the imperial court, at the same rank as wild ginseng or reishi: banquet treasure and offering of longevity, rare in the wild. Three names for one same cascade: a crouching monkey, a praying monk, a feline. Three imaginaries, one same form — the white spines hanging from the old beech like snow that had decided to grow downward.

Lion's Mane is a being from another kingdom. Not a plant: a fungus, closer to animals than to herbs on the tree of the living. Fresh, sautéed in a pan, her flesh has a delicate umami flavour, close to crab or lobster; in decoction, she becomes earthy, slightly bitter — the taste of things that work in depth and without noise.

Her grammar is that of the Chinese sage and the Japanese monk: not awakening by flash, but the clarity that accumulates over weeks. Not an immediate effect — a deep-ground companion. Three peoples have named this mushroom, and each name is a reading of the world.

In China, he is houtou — 猴頭, "monkey's head": the shaggy cascade suggested to the scholar an arboreal beast. Chinese medicine has used him for a very long time — tradition speaks of more than two thousand years — as a tonic of cognitive function, of digestion and of vigour, and more specifically in uses tied to ulcers and gastritis. Rare in the wild, he was long a luxury reserved for the imperial court, on a par with wild ginseng or reishi: a treasure of the banquet and of the longevity offering. Modern cultivation has made him, since the middle of the 20th century, an accessible mushroom — an emperor's treasure become a companion of the everyday.

In Japan he carries the name yamabushitake — literally the mushroom of the yamabushi, the ascetic monks of the Shugendō tradition, those practitioners of the mountain, of fasting and of long walking who meditated under freezing waterfalls. The name is not arbitrary: the yamabushi ritual garments are fringed with white pompoms, the suzukake, and the fringed cascade of the mushroom is uncannily like that uniform. As though the mountain had itself dressed the mushroom as a monk. The ethnobotanical sources report that he was one of their allies of concentration and endurance. (The precise liturgical use by the yamabushi is not documented at first hand in our sources: INFUSE keeps the name as an inheritance of language, without inventing a ritual for it.)

Further still, the Ainu folklore of Hokkaidō saw him as an offering of the forest spirits, a sign of benevolent presence on the old trees; and on the other side of the Pacific, the Cherokee and other peoples of the Eastern Woodlands are said to have used the neighbouring species Hericium americanum as a styptic — the spongy flesh stops bleeding. Scattered documentation, but coherent from one continent to the other.

What links all these lineages is one and the same grammar of use: not a substance that acts in a single go, but a background companion — taken every day, over time, because what he leaves behind depends on regularity more than on intensity. That is exactly the DAILY mode: not the event, but the habit held.

The rule of gentle heat. Like many traditional mushroom preparations, Lion's Mane is worked in gentle heat — simmering, infusing, never a rolling boil. The Asian tradition favours the simmer (around 80 °C). It is a gesture of cooking as much as of respect: you do not rush a thing that grew slowly.

The morning gesture. The powder lends itself to the daily ritual: a spoonful in hot plant milk, tea or a smoothie, on waking. It is the simplest use and the truest to the DAILY logic — a fixed point in the day, repeated, with no particular ceremony.

The extract, for those looking for precision. The 8:1 extract is a hot water extract (extraction with hot water alone), made from the fruiting body — with no filler and no mycelium-on-grain. It is a deliberate choice: what is wanted here is the beta-glucans and the hericenones of the fruiting body, soluble in hot water, and not the erinacines of the mycelium (which call for an alcoholic maceration). Suggested dose: 0.5 g, once or twice a day. The form for those who want a known concentration rather than a volume.

INFUSE currently sources its Lion's Mane in Japan. Quality control (analyses) is carried out in France. The complete details of the supply chain — harvester, batch, method of cultivation, any certification — are being confirmed and are not asserted here until they are verified.

One requirement guides our choice: in the Lion's Mane market, a mycelium grown on grain can be rich in starch and poor in compounds. A stated percentage of "polysaccharides" does not mean much — starch is a polysaccharide. That is why our extract is made from the fruiting body (and not from mycelium-on-grain), with a guaranteed content of at least 18 % beta-glucans, with no added filler. It is that distinction, and not an argument of volume, that makes the quality of a Lion's Mane.
