Cardiovascular disorders: Bala is not advised for people suffering from hypertension, arrhythmia or any known cardiac or vascular disorder. The alkaloids she contains can raise blood pressure and speed up the heart rate.

Supervised use, not free use: concentrated forms of ephedrine fall under supervised use. Bala is received in small doses, in a short cure, never in prolonged free consumption. Start low, do not stack with other stimulants.

Associated stimulants: avoid combining with caffeine, guarana, other stimulant plants or decongestants based on pseudoephedrine — risk of an additive effect on the heart and on blood pressure.

Sport and testing: ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are among the substances classed as doping agents. Bala is to be ruled out before any anti-doping control.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children: not advised as a principle, in the absence of sufficient data and because of the stimulant composition.

Why is Bala restricted in Europe?

After accidents linked to supplements concentrated in ephedrine alkaloids — mostly Ephedra-based, not Bala — the US FDA banned these alkaloids as supplements in 2004, Europe followed in 2015. The restriction strikes an isolated and concentrated form that Ayurvedic tradition never used: her lineage of use is oily and milky, restorative.

How do I prepare Bala powder?

Dilute about 3 to 5 g of powder (a teaspoon) in a warm drink — plant milk or simmering water at 80°C — or a smoothie, without bringing to boil. The Ayurvedic way readily associates rasayana with a fatty and warm vehicle. To receive in small dose, in short cure, never in indefinite daily habit.

What is Ksheerabala?

Ksheerabala is the purest form of Bala in tradition — not an herbal tea but an oil. The root is long-cooked in milk and sesame oil, sometimes seven times or a hundred and one times, to give a medicated oil used in massage (abhyanga) and as a stream on the forehead (shirodhara). In Sanskrit, Bala carries several converging meanings: strength, power, youth, energy. For a long time, she has accompanied body and mind through periods of fatigue, rebuilding, sustained effort — those moments when strength must be restored from within, rather than pushed from outside.

In its resin form, Bala becomes a concentrated ally. Approached in small quantities, with regularity, she is traditionally associated with physical endurance, with confidence, and with an anchored sense of motivation — supporting both the body and the inner posture with which one meets life.

Bala is one of the rare plants classed as *Rasayana* in the Ayurvedic tradition — a category associated with the circulation of vital essence and long-term regeneration.

She is one of the oldest medicinal plants of the Indian subcontinent, used across multiple traditional systems. Bala belongs to the pharmacopoeia of Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of the Indian subcontinent, transmitted and codified over more than two millennia by the vaidyas — the physicians of that lineage. In the 2nd century CE, Caraka enters the plant in two distinct categories of the Sūtrasthāna: balya — that which gives strength — and brmhaniya — that which gives mass back to the tissues. Two registers that are often confused and that tradition keeps apart: a plant can give strength without giving the tissue back, and the other way round. Bala does both. She is held to be a major rasayana — a substance of restoration and rejuvenation — with a predilection for troubles of the vata type, the air-ether element whose excess dries, agitates and disperses the nervous system.

The lineage of use has never been broken: the vaidyas still prescribe Bala for the same states Caraka noted — weakness after childbirth, convalescence after a long illness, ageing, vata disorders of the nervous system. Botanically, Bala (Sida cordifolia L., the "heart-leaved sida") is a Malvaceae of the genus Sida, which counts around two hundred species spread across the warm and tropical zones of both hemispheres. All of them received in Sanskrit the collective name bala, "that which distributes strength" — a whole family placed under the sign of vitality.

The oil that is passed on. The purest form of Bala in the tradition is not the tea: it is the oil. The root, ground and then cooked at length in milk and sesame oil — a preparation described by Sushruta around the 4th century, seven cookings, sometimes a hundred and one — becomes Ksheerabala, the milk-oil of bala. A medicated oil, almost without smell, used in abhyanga (daily massage) and in shirodhara (a thread of oil on the forehead). In the Keralan tradition, the young mother receives it during the forty days that follow the birth: the body takes shape again, the tissues come home, the nervous system burnt by childbirth finds its calm again. A knowledge passed on by women for two millennia, long before anyone could explain it. (INFUSE offers the powdered root, not this oil.)

The plant also runs through the classical erotological literature of India. The Ratirahasya (also called Koka Shastra), an ancient treatise on the art of loving, mentions Bala among the components of an aphrodisiac preparation, alongside shatavari and other plants. That memory is not a selling point: it is a marker of lineage, the trace of a plant long held as a tonic of vitality in the full sense — from the body that restores itself to the desire that comes back with it.

The classic Ayurvedic path readily pairs the rasayana with a warm, fatty vehicle — plant milk rather than water alone — because tradition holds that gentle heat and a fatty body carry the plant better to the ground. No fierce heat: stay under the boil (~80 °C), let it infuse, drink slowly. The root decoction, the other traditional path, simmers the root for about fifteen minutes before straining; it is readily brought together with a pinch of cardamom and a little ghee.

A marker, not a prescription. Given the natural presence of stimulant alkaloids (see Precautions), Bala is received in small doses, in a short cure window rather than as an indefinite daily habit. Start low, observe, do not stack. This is not a background drink to be multiplied through the day.
