What is Chaga?

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic fungus that grows on the bark of birch trees in boreal forests — Siberia, northern Europe, North America. The black, cracked conk that is harvested is not a classic mushroom cap but a dense mycelial mass, brown-orange at heart. An earthy drink with coffee and caramel notes, traditionally drunk as a long decoction.

Why is Chaga called the mushroom of immortality?

It is a traditional nickname, inherited from Siberian and East Asian medicines, where Chaga was held as an elixir of longevity. In China she was also called king of plants. These names speak the esteem of the peoples who used her for centuries — they describe a reputation, not a health promise.

How do I prepare Chaga?

The traditional way is the long decoction, never boiling water. Count 2 to 3 spoons of ground Chaga for 1 litre of water, gentle simmer 20 to 30 minutes, until a deep brown colour. The pieces can be reused several times. The 8:1 powder extract dissolves directly — 0.5 g once or twice a day in a warm drink.

Do I really need a double extraction for Chaga?

Yes, for the complete medicine. Chaga keeps her compounds in two compartments — beta-glucans are water-soluble, triterpenes (including betulin, inherited from the birch) are alcohol-soluble. A simple water infusion pulls only part. Double extraction (water + alcohol) opens both doors; this is the reason for the INFUSE 8:1 extract.

Does Chaga contain caffeine?

No, Chaga does not contain caffeine. This is precisely why many make her a morning coffee replacement — her earthy warmth and coffee-caramel taste give a warm ritual without the jitters or caffeine spike.

What are the precautions and contraindications of Chaga?

Chaga is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding for lack of data, in case of anticoagulant treatment, active autoimmune disease, history of oxalate kidney stones (she is rich in oxalates) and treated diabetes. Stop her two weeks before any surgery. When in doubt, ask your doctor's advice before using her.

Chaga grows where birches grow: the boreal forests of the northern hemisphere, in Siberia as in North America. A parasitic fungus, he takes the paper birch and the yellow birch for hosts, pierces their bark and forms a sterile conk — that black, cracked fruiting body which can take a decade or more to swell on the living tree. His slowness is his signature: Chaga is in no hurry.

All along the boreal belt, the first peoples know him. The Khanty of western Siberia hold the oldest documented tradition of him; to the north, the Komi and the Sami; on the other side of the ocean, the Cree, Innu, Ojibwe and Anishinaabe of the forests of Canada. Among the forest peoples of Siberia, he is known under the name chaga and held to be a traditional medicine of value. Among the Anishinaabe — the People of the Fire — he carries the name shkitagen and a wholly different use, which Robin Wall Kimmerer documents in Braiding Sweetgrass: that of keeper of the fire. A tinder fungus, shkitagen does not let an ember die. A spark that meets him does not go out; it smoulders slowly in the fungal matrix, holding its heat, ready to relight the flame.

On the Canadian side, it is said that the medicine lies neither in the birch alone, nor in the Chaga alone, but in their bond — two grandmothers leaning on one another. The fungus takes up the tree's defences; whoever drinks Chaga receives both. And the harvest there obeys a protocol of respect: ask the tree, take only what is needed, let the small conks grow, give thanks, harvest only in winter, detach without wounding the bark.

Kimmerer also recalls an ecology that is easily forgotten: the birch forests that host Chaga were tended by indigenous burning. Fire lit on purpose regenerated the soil, and those burnt forests were a cornucopia of gifts — among them the host of Inonotus obliquus. The fungus that keeps the fire grew where the peoples knew how to make fire. A perfect loop. And a loop threatened today: with the cutting of the forests and the suppression of fire — which endangers the species that depend on burnt soils — shkitagen is becoming harder and harder to find.

It is the finest lesson Chaga has to offer the everyday: it is not about producing a flame every hour, but about keeping alive the heat that lets you relight it. To hold, without going out.

Chaga is a slow medicine. His traditional preparation is the long decoction — not the quick infusion, and never boiling water.

The decoction that keeps. In the pan, tradition decocts generously: 2 to 3 spoons of ground Chaga in a litre of water, a gentle simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, until the liquid takes on a deep, dark hue. A plant milk for roundness — a 1:1 milk/water ratio works well. And used Chaga is not thrown away straight off: it can be reused several times, extending the simmering a little each round, until it no longer darkens. A simple gesture for the everyday: keep a base of liquid and Chaga in the pan after use, put it in the cold until the next day, refresh it with a little powder every few days. A medicine of duration right down to its economy.

Why the double extraction. Chaga keeps his medicine in two compartments. The beta-glucans are soluble in water; the triterpenes — among them betulin, the compound the fungus inherits from his host birch — are soluble in alcohol. A simple water infusion draws out only one half. The double extraction (water + alcohol) opens both doors. That is the whole reason for the INFUSE 8:1 extract, guaranteed ≥ 12 % glucans and ≥ 0.5 % betulin: the complete medicine, not the half.

A marker, not a prescription. The powder asks for patience at the pan; the extract gives direct access in the morning cup.
