Zornia latifolia is a perennial legume of the Fabaceae family, native to a broad South American band — from Brazil and the Guianas to Paraguay, by way of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. A plant of grasslands, of roadsides, of open land: she grows where the ground is left free, and is part of the agricultural landscape of rural Brazil.

Her name travels with the peoples: maconha brava in Brazilian Portuguese ("wild marijuana"), a name probably born at the end of the colonial period, when settlers and enslaved people were looking for smoking substitutes for cannabis; tencilla in Mexico; koemataballi in Suriname, in the Sranan Tongo and Carib languages — a percussive sound, like a beat.

In rural Brazil, the raizeiros (popular herbalists) have long known her as calming and sleep-inducing: an evening decoction for light sleepers. In Bahia and Mato Grosso, she was folded into tonics for convalescents. Often planted as a hedge near the houses, she served both as fodder and as domestic medicine. The Tupi-Guarani peoples are said to have used her before colonisation, but the ethnographic sources are rare and fragmentary — the oral transmission was broken, the knowledge thinned out.

In the syncretic Afro-Brazilian rituals (Umbanda, Candomblé), this small herb sometimes enters into the ritual cigarettes offered to the caboclos, those indigenous spirits: the medium smokes them to bring the spirit down into the body. Maconha Brava serves the incarnation rather than the flight — coherent with her temperament.
