Her name already says the double signature. Eleutherococcus, from the Greek eleútheros — free, owing nothing to any master — and kókkos — seed, berry, kernel. The free seed. Senticosus — covered in spines. The free seed wrapped in spines. She grows in total autonomy where few species survive — at minus forty, in the taiga, nine months of winter — and she defends herself by a wall of needles so dense that Siberian trappers baptised her the devil's bush. To reach the root, you must cross a wall of thorns. She is earned — physically.

The Chinese name her Ci Wu Jia (刺五加) — "five stinging spines" — and place her among the superior herbs: those one can take for a whole life, that solidify the terrain rather than force an effect. The commercial name "Siberian ginseng" is an American marketing decision from the late 1960s — the plant is not a Panax, she belongs to a cousin genus. The shortcut says what she does; the Chinese word says what she is.

Three lineages cross in this root, and none of them is ceremonial in the shamanic sense: they are lineages of survival and of discipline.

The peoples of the taiga. Eleutherococcus senticosus grows wild in the mixed, mountainous forests of the Russian Far East, north-eastern China, Korea and Japan — often in thickets so thorny that they become nearly impenetrable. The indigenous peoples of Siberia, the Evenki (Tungus) and the Yakut, have used her for centuries to endure those brutal winters. Before long hunts or crossings of the frozen tundra, they prepared decoctions of the root to keep their inner heat and their endurance. Hunters chewed the dried root to stay alert through expeditions lasting several days. The plant was not a medicine in the Western sense: she was a food-medicine, woven into the daily pattern of a life in extreme conditions.

Chinese medicine. In the Chinese pharmacopoeia, eleuthero is called Ci Wu Jia (刺五加) and figures among the superior herbs — those that can be taken regularly, that support vitality and longevity. Her first textual mention is found in the Shennong Bencaojing, the founding classic of the Chinese pharmacopoeia. In ancient Chinese medicine, the plant was above all taken as a wine, mixed with other herbs (yuan zhi, lycium root, mu gua, niuxi), as a tonic against fatigue, joint pain and lower-back pain. [D. The Soviet adaptogen revolution. This is where the root enters modern history. The word adaptogen itself was coined by Soviet pharmacologists — Lazarev first, then Israel Brekhman — to describe the action of this plant. In 1959, Brekhman established her benefits in comparison with Asian ginseng: more common, less costly, more widely adaptable. [Winston & Maimes, p.45-47] The Soviet programme aimed at improving the performance of elite personnel — athletes, military, officers, chess players. The extract was used by Russian Olympic athletes (late 1970s-early 1980s) and included in the space programme for the cosmonauts in 1977. [Winston & Maimes, p.43-48] Hence the nickname: the plant of the cosmonauts.

The morning decoction. The historical form. The dried, cut root is set to simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes, then strained. Traditional Russian recipe: 2 to 3 tablespoons of root in about 1 litre of water, brought to a gentle simmer, drunk hot, in several servings spread through the day. You can reuse the same roots once or twice. For a single cup: 1 to 2 teaspoons of root for 250 ml. The taste is subtly earthy, slightly bitter, with a sweet finish.
