At least four peoples have recognised Canavalia rosea.

The Mazatec and the pre-Columbian coastal peoples of Oaxaca, the Yucatán and the Peruvian coast — a funerary use documented by archaeology across more than a millennium, from 300 BCE to 900 CE: baybean leaves have been found in tombs. The exact ritual content was lost with the colonial rupture, but the coherence of the context (plant of the threshold, plant of travelling seeds, plant of passages) suggests a ceremonial use tied to death. Christian Rätsch also reports that a painting on a Moche vessel may depict her fruits (Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants, p.143). More than twelve centuries of funerary presence in the ground — which plant of today would have been found in so many tombs?

The farming people of the Gulf coast of Mexico — Veracruz, Tabasco — where the evening smoke of baybean remains a living practice today, a gentle and accessible alternative to cannabis. Frijolillo, she is sometimes called in popular Spanish. Rätsch enters her in the table of Marijuana Substitutes (p.142-143). Not a dead folklore: a real regional continuity.

The Filipinos, who name her pataning dagat — "sea bean". Pataning = bean in Tagalog; dagat = sea. The name is descriptive, functional — like Ajo Sacha in Quechua-Spanish. Traditional uses: a poultice of leaves on the skin, a root decoction for the kidneys, boiled seeds as a famine food (always well cooked), roasted seeds as a coffee substitute.

The Aboriginal peoples of the Australian coasts, the Polynesians and the Micronesians — converging uses: stems as mattress bedding, leaves as a poultice, seeds boiled at tropical stopovers. The crew of Captain James Cook, during the voyage of HMS Endeavour (1768-1771), ate boiled baybean seeds to hold out on the long crossings. Cook himself mentions the plant in his journal.

What strikes you across these accounts is the pantropical coherence. Every people who met the plant recognised her for the same thing — a modest utilitarian plant of the coast, a plant of the evening smoke, a plant of the passage.

Blended with other evening plants, in the same drink: poppy, mulungu, calea, lavender — depending on the quality of evening you are after.
Start low: the resin is concentrated (~100 g of leaves for 1 g of resin). Adjust over a few evenings before increasing. No race, no peak.

Traditional marker on the Gulf coast: the living practice is the smoke of the dried leaves in a blend. INFUSE does not sell the smoking blend — the resin paste is designed for the oral path. The inhaled path belongs to the local tradition.
