크리스마스와 주현절 사이, 알프스와 바이에른에서는 연기가 집 안을 지나가요. 열두 밤, 숯불을 담은 작은 그릇, 숯 위에 올린 쑥. 독일어로 바이푸스(Beifuß)라 부르는 쑥(Artemisia vulgaris)은 그 지방의 허브로, 오래전부터 그곳에서 태우는 식물 가운데 하나였어요. 집 안에서 이어 온 풍습이고, 먼 곳에서 온 허브도 그 안을 함께 지나가요. 화이트 세이지(Salvia apiana), 팔로산토, 임페포. 화이트 세이지는 연기용으로 찾는 사람이 많아 원산지에서 많이 채집돼요. 저희 화이트 세이지는 히말라야에서 와요.

A bowl that holds the heat, a charcoal disc lit until it glows, a window ajar. Smoke asks for air.

Loose herbs, on the embers
Mugwort, imphepho and Mexican tarragon go on the glowing charcoal in a pinch. A little is enough; the smoke rises by itself.

The stick and the bundle, lit as they are
Palo santo (stick) and white sage (bundle) are lit directly: let the flame die down and the ember smoke, with a bowl held beneath for the ash.

Walk through the rooms
Carry the bowl from room to room, from the corners towards the door. The air renews itself through the open window.

The ember goes out completely before you leave the room, watched until the end. Air the house, and the night goes on.
