Chilcuague (Heliopsis longipes), Mexican golden root

⊹ The path of the plant

⊹ FREQUENT QUESTIONS ⊹

We answer.

What is chilcuague (Heliopsis longipes)?

Chilcuague is a root endemic to central Mexico — Heliopsis longipes, which only grows in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro and Guanajuato. The Pame, Chichimec, Otomí and Nahua peoples have used it for centuries as a medicine of the mouth, the voice and punctual dental discomforts. Its Mexican name Raíz de Oro (Golden Root) speaks of the value once attached to it — historically traded as a treasure.

What is chilcuague called in English?

Golden root, or Mexican golden root. In Mexico she also goes by chilcuán, chilcuas, pelitre, raíz azteca, hierba de la muela (toothache herb) and raíz de oro; the name chilcuague comes from Nahuatl.

What is chilcuague root?

It is the dried root of Heliopsis longipes, the raíz de oro of central Mexico, imported from Mexico like the root we macerate for the spray. It carries affinin, the molecule behind the tingle. INFUSE also offers it as dried root, alongside the 50 ml spray.

How was chilcuague root traditionally used in Mexico?

In the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro and Guanajuato, the Chichimeca and Otomí pressed a piece of root against the gum; in Mexican markets it was sold as hierba de la muela, the tooth herb. It was traded like a treasure, hence the name raíz de oro. We tell these uses as a tradition; the root is sold dried, as it is.

Is chilcuague the root or the agave spirit?

In Mexico, "chilcuague" also names an agave spirit. INFUSE sells the root: dried Heliopsis longipes, or macerated into a mouth spray, with no agave.

How do you use chilcuague spray?

One to three sprays under the tongue or in the mouth, 5 to 10 minutes before a public speech, song or reading. The wake-up is immediate: a characteristic tingling that spreads from tongue to jaw, the mouth awakens, the voice opens.

All questions
Why does chilcuague make your mouth tingle?

It is the signature of affinine, an alkylamide also found in Echinacea. It is what triggers the characteristic tingling of Heliopsis longipes.

Why is chilcuague called the Mexican toothache root?

Because the Chichimeca and Otomí of the Sierra Gorda have pressed the root against the gum for centuries — the affinine tingle is strong enough to numb the mouth. That is the name the plant carries, and the history behind it. INFUSE offers her for the voice, not for the tooth: for any persistent pain, see a dentist.

How long does the Chilcuague effect last?

It is a flash-threshold plant. The effect appears within ten seconds and typically lasts between 5 and 30 minutes. Precisely useful when one has little time to gather oneself before an important moment.

What precautions with Chilcuague?

Do not use more than 6 consecutive days — its potent purifying power can also affect the intestinal microbiome with prolonged use. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding without professional advice. Contraindicated for those allergic to Asteraceae (daisies, chamomile, echinacea).

Is chilcuague safe to consume?

In Mexico the root has been used for centuries as a spice and a mouth remedy. Human studies remain scarce. Here she is taken as a mouth spray, one to three sprays: follow the precautions on this page (pregnancy and breastfeeding only with professional advice, allergy to the aster family).

Where does INFUSE's Chilcuague come from?

The root is imported from Mexico, then macerated 2 months in artisan Apple Spirit sourced locally in Brittany, France. Bottled in a 50 ml amber spray.

Is Chilcuague legal?

Yes. Freely sold in France and the European Union.

What does chilcuague feel like?

The medicine of expression. An electric tingle: the mouth awakens, the voice is set free — and you come back into your body all at once, present, here, clear-minded. One to three sprays under the tongue, 5 to 10 minutes before a song or a speech.
