§0 — A fissure to begin with
Schisandra is often presented under the label “adaptogen for the liver.” That is fair — there is precise data on its liver-protective effect.
The Chinese name is wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子) — the five-flavor seeds. Five, because the dried berry carries in the mouth all at once: sour (酸 suān) on the surface, sweet (甜 tián) a second later, bitter (苦 kǔ) at the core, pungent (辛 xīn) in the aftertaste, and salty (鹹 xián) at the end of chewing. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the five flavors correspond to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), and thus to the five organs (liver, heart, spleen, lung, kidneys). A single berry carrying the five flavors touches the five organs — this, and not the liver alone, is what TCM sees in schisandra: a multi-organ tonic, a companion of longevity.
It is also a hunting plant among the Nanai and Udege peoples of eastern Siberia. Hunters would eat a handful of dried berries before long tracking — to support endurance, calm thirst, and “see far” (a mild ophthalmic effect documented in modern biomedicine).

I. Who she is
Name and lineage
Canonical name: Schisandra. Chinese name: 五味子 (wǔ wèi zǐ, “the five-flavor seeds”). Russian name: лимо́нник кита́йский (limonnik kitayskiy, “little Chinese lemon tree”) — it was this Russian name that carried schisandra into Soviet research on adaptogens. Latin name: Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., 1868. Family: Schisandraceae (formerly classified as Magnoliaceae). Geographic origin: mixed forests of Northeast China (Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang provinces), eastern Russian Siberia (Primorye, Khabarovsk), Korea, Japan (boreal zones).
To be distinguished from Schisandra sphenanthera (nán wǔ wèi zǐ, southern schisandra), a neighboring species, less studied, with partly different active compounds — used in TCM for close but distinct indications (more for the spleen, less for the liver). INFUSE works mainly with S. chinensis (the “North”).
Sensory description
Schisandra is a woody climbing vine (up to 10 meters), with deciduous, alternate, oval, slightly fleshy leaves. White or pale-pink flowers, fragrant, dioecious (sexes separated on two different plants — a male and a female are needed for fruiting). Fruits in hanging clusters of red berries, glossy when fresh, wrinkled and dark red-brown once dried. Each berry contains 1–2 kidney-shaped, yellow-brown seeds.
The taste — at the heart of the plant’s identity:
- Sour first — the fleshy skin
- Sweet next — residual sugars of the pulp
- Bitter in the middle — the seed
- Pungent behind — volatile compounds
- Salty in the finish — mineral salts
Tasting a dried schisandra, slowly chewed: five taste qualities cross the mouth in under a minute. It is an exercise in attention.
Real habitat
Humid mixed forests, edges, mid-altitude valleys (300–1500 m). Acidic to neutral soils. Needs a support to climb. In cultivation: well suited to cold temperate climates (hardy down to −35°C). Present in cultivation in Central Europe (Poland, Germany, western Russia) since the 20th century.
II. What she does in the body
Named active compounds
Schisandra is dominated by lignans — polyphenolic compounds characteristic of the family. The most studied:
- Schisandrin (schisandrin A, B, C) — flagship lignans.
- Gomisins (gomisin A, B, C, D, N) — derivatives.
- Schisandrol A and B.
- Schisantherin A.
Others: organic acids (citric, malic, tartaric — explaining the acidity), vitamins C and E, anthocyanins (the red color), essential oils, polysaccharides.
Documented effects (gradient of evidence)
- Hepatoprotection: the best-documented effect. Soviet studies of the 1960s–1980s (Brekhman, Lazarev), then contemporary Chinese research (>200 publications), then modern clinical trials. Protective effect on liver cells against toxics (CCl4 in animal models, paracetamol, alcohol). Normalization of elevated transaminases in humans.
- Physical endurance: Soviet research confirmed the anti-fatigue effect in animals and humans (athletes, soldiers, workers). Effect on VO2max moderately documented.
- Cognition: effect on sustained attention, working memory, measured in humans during prolonged work. Not a dazzling nootropic — a background support.
- Cortisol and stress: documented cortisol modulation, mild anxiolytic effect in animals.
- Visual acuity: effect on night visual acuity and dark adaptation documented in Soviet research — hence the use among Soviet military pilots during the Second World War.
INFUSE stance
INFUSE does not say that schisandra “detoxifies the liver.” “Detoxify” is a word banished from the INFUSE Living Lexicon (layer 2 of the LANGAGE-FILTRE). What can be said: the TCM tradition uses schisandra in liver-support formulas (notably Wu Wei Zi Gao — wu wei zi paste), and modern research confirms a protective effect on hepatocytes against several aggressors.
Traditional effect — body and psyche
In TCM, schisandra falls into the category of astringent tonics (shōu shāp yào). Energetics: warm, slightly sour. Enters the Lung, Kidney, and Heart meridians. Classic indications: chronic cough with Lung Qi deficiency; nocturnal spermatorrhea, polyuria, night sweats (consolidation of the essences); palpitations, insomnia with Heart Yin deficiency.
On the psyche: schisandra is said to “calm the Shen while supporting the Qi” — that is, to support wakefulness without agitation. For someone who stays awake a long time but does not want to be overstimulated.
III. How to meet her
Traditional preparations
Decoction (the classic TCM route): 3–6 g of crushed dried berries, boiled 20–30 minutes in 500 ml of water. Red-brown liquid, bursting into five flavors. Drunk hot, 1–2 times a day, in a cure of several weeks.
Chewing the dry berries: 5–10 dry berries chewed slowly in the morning on an empty stomach, a practice of Nanai and Udege hunters.
Infusion: for more everyday use, 1 teaspoon of crushed berries in a cup of simmering water, infused 10 minutes. Milder taste than in decoction.
Liqueur (Russia, China): berries in grain alcohol or rice wine, macerated several weeks. A small tonic glass in the morning. Traditional Russian form, inherited from Siberian hunters.
Tincture (contemporary herbalist route): 1:5 or 1:3 in 40–60° alcohol.
Concentrated extract powder: clinical route. INFUSE does not offer this form. The Living Lexicon §IV bans third-party standardized extracts from body prose.
Dosage by lineage
- TCM decoction: 3–6 g/day of dried berries, in a cure of 4–8 weeks, with a pause.
- Contemporary clinical route (descriptive only): trials typically use 500–2000 mg of dry extract over 4–12 weeks.
- Gentle daily maintenance: 1–2 g/day of whole berries, chewed or infused.
The season of life when she speaks best
For a body that keeps watch a great deal without overstimulation — students during exams, parents of young children in sleep deprivation, long-distance drivers, long-haul intellectual workers. For a liver stressed by the modern environment (alcohol, pollutants, long-term medication — without replacing a treatment). For a body coming out of convalescence.
Peak season of use: late winter / early spring (TCM), when the liver works the seasonal transition.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy: to be avoided (possible uterotonic effect).
- Breastfeeding: to be avoided without professional advice.
- Active peptic ulcer: caution (acidity, may irritate).
- Severe gastroesophageal reflux: caution.
- Intracranial hypertension, epilepsy: to be avoided.
- Serotonergic antidepressants: possible interaction.
- Anticoagulants: caution (possible modulation of hepatic metabolism).
- Drugs metabolized by CYP450: schisandra modulates the activity of several hepatic cytochromes — consult before combining.
Synergies
- Reishi: classic TCM companion for Shen support and longevity.
- Goji: a tonic-longevity pairing frequent in TCM formulas.
- Eleuthero: Russian synergy — the two were studied together by Brekhman as key adaptogens of the Soviet formulary.
- Rhodiola: another Nordic adaptogen companionship.
IV. Lineage — named source peoples
Classical Chinese medicine
Schisandra is named in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (神農本草經, The Classic of the Materia Medica of Shen Nong) — the founding text of the Chinese pharmacopoeia, compiled between the 1st and 3rd century CE from much earlier oral sources. It is classified there among the superior remedies (上品 shàng pǐn) — the category of non-toxic plants, to be taken long-term for longevity, without risk. This shàng pǐn classification is shared with reishi (líng zhī 靈芝) and ginseng (rén shēn 人參), among others.
The wǔ wèi zǐ appears in most of the great classic formulas: Sheng Mai San (生脈散, “Pulse-Restoring Decoction,” the three-plant formula: ginseng + mai men dong + wu wei zi), Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (six flavors, in certain variants), Suo Quan Wan (urinary retention).
Soviet research (Lazarev, Brekhman)
From the 1940s, Nikolai Lazarev (who coined the term “adaptogen” in 1947), then Israil Brekhman (who published the first Western synthesis on the subject in 1969), studied at Vladivostok the local plants used by the Nanai and Udege peoples of the Russian Far East. Schisandra is one of the three flagship plants of their research (with eleuthero and rhodiola). During the Second World War, the Soviet army distributed schisandra extracts to its pilots to support night visual acuity and endurance.
Nanai (Goldi) and Udege peoples
The Nanai (autonym: Naanai, “people of the land”) and Udege peoples live in the Amur basin and the Primorye, boreal forests of the Russian Far East. For them, schisandra is a hunting plant — berries chewed before long tracking, for endurance, thirst, sustained attention. It is from this use, observed by 19th-century Russian explorers, that European medicine first hears of the plant.

- Israil Brekhman (1921–1994) — Russian physician, founder of the modern study of adaptogens, founding book Eleutherococcus (Nauka, 1968).
- Subhuti Dharmananda (Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland USA) — rigorous Western syntheses on TCM and Chinese adaptogens.
- David Winston (RH(AHG)) — American herbalist, compiles a solid Western synthesis.
What we don’t do
We do not say “the secret berry of Taoist monks” without a citation — a formula of decorative mystery. The wǔ wèi zǐ is documented from the earliest written Chinese herbals, with no particular esoteric aspect. It is an everyday plant, skillfully positioned, of the Chinese pharmacopoeia.
V. Our relationship — what INFUSE can say honestly
INFUSE offers schisandra in its repertoire. Origin: sourced from Central Europe or China, depending on the batch. Form: whole dried berries (not standardized extract).
What we do not yet master:
- Direct named-producer sourcing: we go through European organic suppliers. No direct relationship with a Chinese cooperative in Heilongjiang or a named Polish farm to date.
- Chinensis vs sphenanthera distinction: on the Chinese wholesale market, the two species are sometimes mixed. We check visually on receipt (the chinensis is larger, darker red, more rounded). No DNA test.
- Wild harvest vs cultivation: the Chinese market is mostly cultivated today. The pressure on wild populations of the Russian Far East is real and documented. We avoid wild Siberian batches (doubtful traceability, ecological pressure).
What we would like, without promising it: a relationship with a Polish organic farm or with a cooperative in Liaoning, and a page that restores the five flavors as an experience to taste, not as a picturesque curiosity.
