Undlela Ziimlophe — the white paths, a sangoma initiation plant

Synaptolepis kirkii — the white initiation root of the Zulu and Xhosa sangoma tradition. "Undlela ziimlophe" means "the white paths" — the channels of communication with the ancestors. A powerful oneirogen. A plant reserved for a precise initiatic context. This article is written with full awareness of the question of appropriation.

Le dernier territoire souverain. On y entre par les plantes, par le silence, par le retour aux songes des anciens.

An editorial warning first.

Undlela Ziimlophe (Synaptolepis kirkii) is an initiation plant in the sangoma tradition — the traditional healers of the Zulu, the Xhosa, and neighbouring peoples of southern Africa. Her traditional use is inseparable from a context: the call of the ancestors (thwasa), preparation under the supervision of a senior sangoma, the initiatic process over several years. Outside that context, the plant can be taken as an oneirogen — but her deepest dimension stays inaccessible without the initiatic relationship.

INFUSE chooses to document this plant with precision — not to make a standardised product of her, but to inform. The plant is not sold stand-alone by INFUSE. She appears in composite preparations (the Ubulawu Discovery Pack) with an explicit editorial posture on the context.

Synaptolepis kirkii — botany and chemistry

Thymelaeaceae — a little-known botanical family. A liana or shrub of southern and eastern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania). White, thick roots, with a characteristic pale bark — hence the association with white, the colour of the ancestors in Nguni cosmology.

Chemistry: daphnane diterpenes (gnidilatin, huratoxin) — irritant compounds in other Thymelaeaceae but apparently active in a different way in Synaptolepis kirkii. The specific alkaloids responsible for the dream effects are not fully identified as of 2026. This is a significant pharmacological gap — the plant "works" according to traditional and contemporary reports, but the molecular mechanism remains largely unknown.

Ubulawu — the group of white initiation plants

"Ubulawu" names the practice and the associated plants: white roots whisked in water to create an abundant foam (the foam is the interface with the ancestral spirits — it carries the messages). Undlela Ziimlophe is one of the central plants of the ubulawu, alongside Silene capensis (Xhosa dream root), Uvuma-omhlope, Mukanya Kude.

The classic preparation: the dried, powdered roots are whisked vigorously in water until a thick foam forms. The initiate drinks the foam on an empty stomach, in the morning, and keeps the rest near the bed to inhale before sleep. The aim is not "to induce dreams" in the Western sense — it is to open the channel of communication with amadlozi (the ancestors).

The term "lucid dreaming" translates the Nguni dimension poorly. It is not a control of the dream — it is a reception. You make yourself available, and the ancestors speak (or not). The plant aids availability, not control.

The INFUSE posture — between documentation and respect

INFUSE documents Undlela Ziimlophe because rigorous documentation is itself a form of respect — one that contrasts with the misinformation circulating on the wellness markets, where the plant is often misidentified, poorly prepared, taken out of context.

The editorial line: to document the initiatic context and its demands. Not to sell the plant separately as a "generic oneirogen." To include the plant in the Ubulawu Discovery Pack with a clear orientation on its context of use. Not to claim any continuity with the sangoma tradition without a direct engagement with sangomas and a redistribution of the benefits to the source communities.

Red lines

Daphnane diterpenes can be strongly irritant to the mucous membranes and the skin — closely related compounds in other Thymelaeaceae are dermocaustic. The traditional preparation (the foam drunk, not a decoction) may limit exposure to the irritant compounds — but the safety margin is not scientifically established.

No taking outside an initiatic context without guidance. No combining with MAOIs or psychoactive substances without qualified supervision. Pregnancy: avoid absolutely (potentially abortifacient in this botanical family).
