We answer.
What is the difference between Roman and German chamomile?
Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile, also called noble chamomile) and German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) are two distinct species, not to be confused. The Roman is perennial, creeping, with full heads, rich in esters with a more floral and soothing profile; the German is annual, upright, and more digestive- and skin-oriented. INFUSE works with the Roman, the chamomile of English gardens.
What are the traditional uses of Roman chamomile?
In European traditions, Roman chamomile is the plant of the shared evening tea, of baths for restless infants, of compresses for tired eyelids and of the flower sachet slipped under the pillow for sweet dreams. A plant of daily fabric rather than event, transmitted from grandmother to grandmother.
How do I prepare a Roman chamomile tea?
Place about a teaspoon of whole flowers in 250 ml of simmering water (never boiling, around 80°C), cover to keep the volatile oils, and let infuse 7 to 10 minutes. The liquid turns pale gold, the apple scent rises. Best drunk in the evening.
Does Roman chamomile help to sleep?
It is her oldest traditional use — the evening tea, the sachet under the pillow for sweet dreams. Recent studies report an effect on sleep quality and nervous calming, found in the In Depth section. INFUSE presents her as a companion of the transition to night, not as a medicine.
Can Roman chamomile be given to children and babies?
Roman chamomile is one of the rare plants crossing the whole cycle of a life — from colicky infant to insomniac elder. Tradition uses her very diluted for young children (a quarter teaspoon in 100 ml, lukewarm), and as a bath. For a baby, always do so under parental or paediatric accompaniment.
Is Roman chamomile contraindicated during pregnancy?
In light infusion, Roman chamomile is traditionally considered gentle. Concentrated extracts, on the other hand, have a theoretical uterostimulant effect at high dose — better to stick to the tea and ask a healthcare professional for advice in case of pregnancy. These are not medical advice.
Which chamomile to choose for the evening, Roman or German?
Both soothe. The Roman, more floral and rich in esters, has a profile more turned toward nervous calm and evening transition; the German leans more toward digestive and skin. For an evening ritual and a dream sachet, Roman chamomile is the traditional companion.
Does Roman chamomile provoke allergies?
She belongs to the Asteraceae family (like daisy, arnica, ragweed). Toxicological literature reports no notable effect apart from occasional allergic reactions. If you are allergic to Asteraceae, test prudently a small quantity before regular use.
