We answer.
What is coltsfoot?
At INFUSE, she is above all the gentlest smoking base in Europe, and a short-cure breath infusion. Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), whose Latin name means "she who acts on cough", is a European plant of the Asteraceae family, known since Greek Antiquity for breath — the golden flower that breaks through frozen ground before its own leaves.
Can coltsfoot be smoked?
Yes — it is her oldest use. Her cottony leaf, almost without taste, burns gently and has served as a neutral base for home-made smoking blends for centuries. She does not bite the throat and creates no dependence. Burning a plant remains an act that releases combustion substances; vaporisation is a gentler way.
Is coltsfoot a good alternative to tobacco?
European tradition has used her as a transition plant for centuries, and massively in Britain during the Second World War for lack of tobacco. She is a bridge plant — the same hand, the same movement, but a leaf that holds no nicotine and creates no dependence. INFUSE offers her in this spirit of gentle transition, not as a medical substitute.
How do I prepare a coltsfoot infusion?
Pour a teaspoon of dried leaves into a cup of simmering water (~80°C), let infuse 10 minutes, strain, sweeten with honey. Tradition drinks 3 to 4 cups per day, in a short cure of a few days only, during an episode of cough or irritated throat.
What is the difference between coltsfoot and mullein?
Both are pillars of breath-friendly smoking bases. Mullein brings the warmth and softness of a thick leaf; coltsfoot brings the cottony softness and the neutral taste. Together, in equal parts, they form the classic foundation of the European smoking blend.
Is coltsfoot dangerous?
Coltsfoot contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (senkirkine, senecionine), hepatotoxic at high and prolonged dose. The German health authority limits daily intake to 1 microgram. She is therefore used in short cures, never continuously, and is contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding, in children and in case of liver fragility. An alkaloid-free variety, 'Wien', exists for regular use.
Which plants pair with coltsfoot for smoking?
The classic base is coltsfoot + mullein in equal parts. For a fruity touch, add raspberry leaves. For a more contemplative evening blend, lay over a little damiana, Mexican tarragon or blue lotus. Our ready-to-use Herbal Mix and Indian Mix blends are built on this logic.
Which part of coltsfoot is used, flower or leaf?
Tradition uses both. Flowers carry lower alkaloid levels; leaves are considered richer in compounds and constitute the best smoking base. INFUSE offers the whole dried leaf, in 30 g and 60 g.
