What is hape?
(See also the Samaúma Hape card for the general context.)
Hape (rapé, rapéh, hapëh) is a fine powder made of:
- Wild tobacco (Nicotiana rustica), roasted and ground
- Plant ashes of a master tree (here Tsunu)
- Sometimes other medicinal plants, according to the pajé's recipe
Blown into the nose with a kuripé (self) or a tepi (ceremonial).
Tsunu — the tree of focus
Platycyamus regnellii (Tsunu in several Amazonian languages, sometimes written Tsunú or Tsuna) = a tree of the Fabaceae family (legumes), reaching 15–25 m. Very widespread in the hape pharmacopoeia.
For the peoples who work with it, Tsunu brings:
- Mental clarity
- Action, movement, unblocking
- Opening of the channels (energetic and physical — sinuses, airways)
- Warrior support (focus, determination)
Effect of Tsunu hape
Compared with Samaúma (maternal, grounding), Tsunu is:
- More stimulating
- More mental (immediate clearing of the fog)
- More directional (the sense of knowing where to go)
- Ideal for the start of the day, decision-making, before analytical meditation, before writing
It is often the entry-level hape for Western practitioners: the effect is felt quickly and clearly, not too “introspective” to start with.
Ritual use
(Identical to Samaúma hape — see the dedicated card for the detailed protocol.)
In brief:
- Clear intention
- 50–100 mg per nostril with the kuripé
- Firm breath
- Silence for 1–3 minutes
- Spit out mucus/saliva
- Hydration
- Meditation or focused action
Quick comparison: Tsunu vs. Samaúma
| Criterion | Tsunu | Samaúma | |---|---|---| | Direction | Mental, clarity, action | Heart, grounding, ancestry | | Tone | Gently stimulating | Soothing, grounding | | Ideal for | Starting the day, deciding, writing | Ceremony, grief, passage | | First use | More accessible | Deeper |
Precautions
(Identical to Samaúma hape — see the card.)
Key points:
- Not a recreational substance
- High blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy: avoid
- Always seated or lying down

- Ethical sourcing essential
INFUSE reading
Tsunu hape is probably the entry-level hape in the INFUSE catalogue — the one a new user can meet first without too much destabilization.
An immediate, legible effect = a good experience of discovery.
It is also the hape that prepares the ground for meeting the deeper hapes afterward (Samaúma, Cumaru, Parika).
