The mother resin

Copal is an oleoresin secreted by several trees of the genera Bursera and Protium. The word comes from the Nahuatl "copalli" = incense. The Maya called it "pom" and regarded it as the "food of the gods".

Found in offerings at the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itzá, in Aztec burials, in the Maya codices.

The stick vs. pure resin

Incense sticks are a transformed form:

• Copal resin blended with a combustible base (charcoal, ground wood, sometimes wood paste)
• Rolled around a bamboo stick
• More practical than pure resin (no glowing charcoal needed)
• But fainter to the nose (diluted resin)

Fragrance and effect

• Notes: citrusy + resinous + honeyed + a light pine
• Olfactory effect: opening, elevation, sober joy
• Ritual effect: purifying the space, inviting benevolent spirits, mental clarity

Use

• Light the tip of the stick, blow out the flame — the ember glows
• Smoke rises = prayers rise (Maya/Aztec cosmology)
• 1 stick = 30–40 minutes
• Ideal for: the start of a meditation, cleansing a room, accompanying cacao ceremonies, the end of the day

Variants

• Copal blanco (the most common) — fresh, citrusy, luminous
• Copal negro (rarer, more precious) — deep, earthy, ancestral
• Copal dorado (gold) — intermediate, fragrant

Precautions

• Air the room well after burning (all smoke = particles)
• Keep away from children and animals (toxicity if the resin is ingested)
• Do not leave it burning unattended
• Ethical sourcing: genuine copal comes from Maya/Mexican communities — favour these direct channels
